Palladium Books® Weekly Update – July 30, 2010

By Kevin Siembieda

It’s been both a productive and a frustrating week. On one hand we accomplished a great deal and books in production are moving closer and closer to release. On the other hand, online sales were way down, we had a couple of disappointing setbacks and we’re feeling a little stressed.

UPDATE: Sales. Online sales stunk this week. They’ve been the lowest I’ve seen in a long while, but that’s coming off a strong few weeks of Christmas in July Grab Bag sales. Times are tough and money’s tight for a lot of folks. Plus Palladium hasn’t had a new book release, other than The Rifter®, since Triax 2 – that’s hurting us most.

But there is good news. New product drives sales across the board. That means Palladium should be in good shape in the months to come, because we have one great product coming after another. People are clamoring for new Palladium product, and we’re working hard to get them out in rapid succession.

Starting in August you’ll see the release of our new Rifts® T-shirt (at the printer and available for ordering right now) and the long awaited Heroes of the Megaverse® sourcebook for Rifts, Heroes Unlimited and all settings across the Megaverse. I also hope to get the Revised and Expanded World Book One: Vampire Kingdoms™ in your hands by the end of August or the first week of September. The Rifts® Vampire Sourcebook, Armageddon Unlimited™, The Rifter® #52 (Horror Special), Dead Reign™ Sourcebook 3, Thundercloud Galaxy™, Rifts® Lemuria, and Robotech®: New Generation™ Sourcebook are all scheduled for release in the last four months of the year. All are currently in development.

The feeling at Palladium Books is positive and we are motivated. SIX books are currently in various stages of final production, and I’ve begun working with artists and writers on several new projects for next year. Ideas are flying like crazy and we are working hard to make Fall 2010 our biggest season for new releases EVER.

UPDATE: Heroes of the Megaverse®. I’m almost done with the writing and Alex and Wayne have begun final editing. Books like this one, that are rules and stat heavy, always take longer to finish. There’s a lot of thought, game balance issues and complex and inter-related details that have to be worked out just right. Plus, fans have waited a long time for this book and I want Heroes of the Megaverse® to be as fun and special as possible. Fear not, it will be released in August. See new details in the bullet points of the description.

UPDATE: The Rifter® #51 – is selling like hot cakes. Don’t know if it is the “official” Triax™ 2 material and/or the Splicers® source material or the whole package, but The Rifter® #51 is selling extremely well. Then again, so is The Rifter® #50, our anniversary issue, so maybe interest in The Rifter® is increasing in general. Have you renewed your Rifter subscription?

UPDATE: The Rifter® #52 is our annual horror issue and full of creepy crawlers and monsters. It is also one of the Fall releases already in production. Wayne has been selecting material and getting it ready for Alex to edit. We have an idea for the cover and may use one of the Art Contest runners-up.

UPDATE: Rifts® Vampire Kingdoms™. I can hardly wait till I can dive into this book and the Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook™. Updates, details, new information, some new artwork and fun, fun, fun. Don’t take my word for it, take a look at the terrifying cover by E.M. Gist depicted elsewhere in this update. Better start placing those pre-orders. We’re shooting for a release at the end of August.

UPDATE: Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook™. You are gonna love it. Trust me, you need to buy this book. ‘Nuff said. Oh, and the cover for this book and most of the interior artwork are already done, we just haven’t revealed them yet.

UPDATE: Armageddon Unlimited™ (for Heroes Unlimited™ and the Minion War™) is another spectacular book by Carl Gleba. I’ve had the pleasure of skimming through this book in preparation to assign the artwork, and wow. There is sooooo much good stuff in this book. The cover by Mark Evans is being worked on even as you read this. See new details in the bullet points of the description.

UPDATE: Rifts® Thundercloud Galaxy™. Artwork has been assigned and is starting to come in. It’s looking great. I also approved the cover sketch ideas by John Zeleznik this week. Nice.

UPDATE: Rifts® Lemuria. Some art has been assigned and work on this title continues to move forward. John Zeleznik is likely to do the cover after all and we are very excited about this title.

UPDATE: Dead Reign™ Sourcebook Three. E.M. Gist is slated to do the cover. I just need to find the time the write this book for an October release. It may be a bit larger than the last two; I’m thinking 96 pages.

NEW! Rifts SAMAS T-Shirt. You have to see the new Rifts® SAMAS T-shirt. The full description and image are elsewhere in this Weekly Update, but I wanted to mention it here. The art is a classic Kevin Long SAMAS. I was sorting through a box of my old file art and found the photocopies of a handful of iconic Kevin Long pencil illustrations for Rifts®. I had Wayne scan and send the SAMAS image to Brian and Allen Manning, and they did a knockout job inking it. Wayne Smith came up with the slogan, and I had a splash of color added for good measure. The end result is a dynamic T-shirt fans should enjoy.

In fact, if you want to show your support for Rifts® and Palladium Books® this is the T-shirt for you. I’m having an extra amount of the larger sizes (3XL to 5XL) made for this shirt, so everyone can get it hot off the press. You can start placing orders now, because it is at the printer and ships in two weeks. Cat. No. 2552.

UPDATE: Dad. For those who don’t know, my Dad has bladder cancer and needs to have his bladder and prostate removed. The date for the surgery is August 31, 2010, and my Dad is nervous and a bit down. My Tuesday visit helped perk up his spirits, and by the time I left, we were laughing and joking.

UPDATE: The last Palladium Collectibles Auction of the Summer comes to an end this Sunday, August 1, 2010. There are some good bargains and a lot of rare stuff, including my popular fantasy prints. I printed them in 1982 or ‘83 and been selling off and on ever since. I’m down to my last half a dozen copies of each. Most of the ones in the auction are framed and ready to hang. The emphasis is Rifts®, Rifters®, Weapon Books and artwork, with signatures galore. We have printer proof copies of the out of print Rifts® Ultimate Gold, and Rifts® Machinations of Doom Gold, plus the Rifts® RPG, Rifts® Dark Conversions, Rifts® Aftermath, sets of The Rifter®, individual copies of out of print issues of The Rifter®, several of the old weapon series titles (from Erick Wujcik’s collection), Kevin Siembieda fantasy prints (almost completely sold out), Mike Wilson original artwork, and more! A detailed description is found elsewhere in this Update. Note: This is the last one for the Summer, but I’m already looking for special items for 1-3 auctions in the Fall (and in time for Christmas gifts).

UPDATE: Live Podcast. My second live podcast in two weeks went very well and we all had fun. It will be my last for a few weeks, but I’ll be back to chat with fans sometime in August or the beginning of September. Note: These “live” podcasts are recorded and can be downloaded for your listening enjoyment anytime.

Kathy Simmons – new life-size Halloween props are being offered online at queenofghouls.com. If you are into Halloween decorations, you need to take a look at her creations. They hold up great in the worst weather, dry out absolutely fine, and break down to the size of a king-size pillow for easy storage (and come with a storage bag). People who came to her weekend display and sale marveled at the craftsmanship, high quality and how cool the creatures looked. They are super-impressive in person. Plus, for Palladium fans, you are likely to get a Kevin Siembieda co-creation as I custom paint about 60% of the monsters’ hands and 35% of the masks/faces. If I didn’t live in an apartment, I’d be buying and displaying a dozen of them myself. I couldn’t help myself and purchased one of the signs. Kathy’s thinking about adding capes and some other smaller items to her array of Halloween creations. Go to queenofghouls.com to see photos of her amazing work and what’s currently left available in her store.

DG in Woonsocket, Rhode Island wrote: You guys ROCK!!! No other company out there cares as much about their fans as Palladium Books. I have all your TMNT® stuff and I will be starting a game next Monday that will crossover Nightbane® in about five sessions. We play Rifts® on Fridays too. It has been such a great break from that “other” RPG that everyone always wanted to play. Looking forward to spending the next year or two focusing on my collection of Palladium RPGs. Keep making ‘em. Thanks!

Only one copy is known to exist, and everyone wants to get their hands on it – good guys and bad (demons, Deevils, the Splugorth, the Dominators, the Kreeghor, etc.). According to legend, he who controls the Book of Heroes and wields the “Power of the 2000,” can rule the universe. Once protected by the Cosmo-Knights, the book has gone missing for millennia. No one knows its fate or the true power contained within its List of Heroes. No one except YOU – the new keepers of this legendary Rune book.

    The Queen of Ghouls
    Halloween fun year round

Kathy sold more of her creations this week, and if the sales follow last year’s pattern, she’ll be selling like hot cakes in the months August and September. If you see something you want, you’d better buy sooner than later. Remember, these are one-of-a-kind works of art.

Palladium’s very own Kathy Simmons makes and sells all-weather, life-sized Halloween props. Each is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Each looks frighteningly “real.” All come apart for easy storage. All come with the lawn stake to stand them up in your front yard. Indoor stand sold separately.

Types of “Ghouls” include: a wild-eye butcher, a ghoulish butler, killer clowns, wizards, witches, devils, grave ghouls, scarecrows, crawling zombies, staggering zombies, all kinds of zombies, executioners, mad doctors, vampires, werewolves, monsters, grave ghouls, and more. Kathy’s also now offering an array of hand-painted Halloween signs, signs with heads and bodies hanging from them, witch’s brewing pots and more. Best of all, her high quality creations are much more affordable and imaginative than most competitors or mass produced items in a store, making them affordable Halloween fun.

If you think the photos online look good, you should see them in person. A typical “ghoul,” as she calls her creations, costs $89-$150. You can see some of her work at her Queen of Ghouls™ Ebay store – queenofghouls.com.
